Flightless Goose by Eric D. Goodman

This morning my boys listened to Flightless Goose on their read-along cd twice, then they asked me to read it to them out loud, and finally my eight-year-old son read it by himself. This is to show you that Flightless Goose is a hit at my house, it is a story based on a real goose from Ohio, and it is a story with a very important message that children understands and can relate to. Flightless Goose is written by Eric D. Goodman and it is illustrated by his wife Nataliya A. Goodman.

Gilbert is a goose just like any other goose in the pond, and he loves to run, play and fly. That is until one day, when he is hit by a car, and while he survives he can no longer fly. At first his friends are helpful and kind, but the kindness soon turns into teasing because he cannot fly, and they name him Gilbert the Flightless Goose. When the rest of the flock flies south for the winter, Gilbert is left to himself and he feels very lonely. When the geese return to the pond in the spring, they will soon realize that Gilbert is great because of who he is, and because he is special just the way he is.

Flightless Goose is a wonderful story that brings empathy from children, it teaches children about tolerance, and it brings out conversation about friendship, teasing and bullying. For parents, educators and grandparents Flightless Goose is a great tool for starting the conversation about bullying, and it is a great way to encourage young children to accept each other despite of and because of their differences. Flightless Goose is a timeless story that could have been written 30 years ago or ten years from now, and it is a story that will be relevant to children everywhere in the world.
